Jumping into open-source can be intimidating, but I recently merged my latest pull request to Apache, titled "Add documentation for cluster service infrastructure starters."
As a CS student diving deep into distributed systems, I noticed that setting up cluster service infrastructure starters was tricky due to missing docs. My PR bridges that gap by providing a clear guide on configuring these starters, complete with setup steps, environment variables, and architectural overviews.
The review process was surprisingly fun and welcoming. A senior maintainer praised the initiative and kindly suggested breaking down my long configuration blocks into smaller, bite-sized snippets to improve readability for new developers. I quickly updated the branch, and after a brief, encouraging chat about beginner onboarding, they hit the merge button!
Through this contribution, I learned how Apache modularizes its infrastructure components and discovered how crucial good documentation is for developer experience. Most importantly, I gained the confidence to navigate massive codebases. If you're a student hesitant to contribute to open source, starting with documentation is an amazing way to dive in!
