Hey everyone! I just merged my latest open source contribution to Apache, and I’m pretty hyped about it. My pull request, titled "Add Security Model documentation (#243)", officially landed in the main repository this week!

As a computer science student diving deeper into open source, I noticed the project lacked a centralized guide explaining its core security architecture. My PR fills that gap by outlining the system's threat boundaries, role-based access control (RBAC), and the official process for reporting vulnerabilities.

The code review process was surprisingly welcoming. One of the core maintainers, Alex, left a super helpful comment on my initial draft: "Great start! Could we clarify how session tokens are revoked during a forced logout?" We had a friendly back-and-forth discussing token invalidation strategies, and I updated the documentation with a clearer sequence diagram based on his feedback before getting the final approval.

This experience taught me that open source contribution isn't just about pushing lines of code—clear technical writing is just as critical. Documenting the security model forced me to understand the project’s architecture at a much deeper, holistic level than I ever would have from just bug fixing. If you're a fellow student looking to contribute to Apache, don't sleep on documentation! It's one of the best ways to learn and give back.
