I just had another pull request merged into the ControlCore-Project, and I’m super hyped about it! My latest contribution fixes Issue #244 with the PR titled: "Fix: Prepend simtime to ZMQ write() payload for consistency."
Before this fix, the ZeroMQ write() function was streaming data payloads without a unified timestamp format. This caused subtle timing bugs for downstream modules trying to parse the real-time control loops. By prepending simtime directly to the ZMQ payload header, all receiving sockets now get a predictable, timestamped package on every cycle.
The code review was an awesome experience. One of the lead maintainers, @AlexDev, caught a small edge case in my initial commit and kindly suggested, "Great fix! Could we also ensure simtime uses a fixed-width integer here so we don't break legacy parsers?" I updated the byte alignment, added a quick unit test to verify the payload structure, and got a friendly "LGTM!" shortly after.
This contribution taught me a ton about low-level socket serialization and why payload consistency is so crucial in distributed, real-time systems. Beyond the C++ and ZMQ practice, it was another great lesson in how welcoming open-source communities can be. On to the next issue!
