Ever since I started diving into open-source physics software, I’ve wanted to contribute to the Hep Software Foundation (HSF). Last week, I had my first pull request merged: fix: rename RendererManager.removeControls() to removeRenderer() (#809)!
The fix itself was straightforward, but crucial for developer ergonomics. The old method name, removeControls(), was misleading because it didn't just detach UI controls—it actually cleaned up and disposed of the entire renderer instance. Renaming it to removeRenderer() makes the API far more intuitive for anyone working on the visualization stack.
The code review process was super encouraging. One of the core maintainers left a friendly comment thanking me for catching the misnomer. We had a quick back-and-forth about whether we needed a deprecation warning first. Since this was an internal refactor for an unreleased module, we agreed a direct rename was best. A final "LGTM!" later, and it was merged into main!
This experience taught me that impactful open-source contributions aren't always about writing hundreds of lines of complex algorithms. Precise naming and clear APIs are just as important for long-term project health. I also gained confidence navigating GitHub PR discussions and collaborating with senior devs. I can’t wait to pick up my next HSF issue!
