As a CS student, diving into real-world open source can feel intimidating, but I’m super excited to share that my latest contribution to Apache just got merged! My pull request was titled "Fix search box overflow by limiting input to 200 chars and increase result cap (#1459)".
The issue was a classic UI bug: pasting extremely long query strings caused the search bar to overflow its container and break the page layout. To fix it, I set a strict 200-character limit on the input field. While working on the code, I noticed the search results were cut off too early, so I also bumped up the result cap to improve the overall search experience.
The code review was awesome! A core maintainer named Sarah left a really friendly comment suggesting I add a subtle character-count indicator so users know why their typing stopped. We had a quick back-and-forth about CSS edge cases, and her feedback made my final implementation much cleaner.
This PR taught me that open-source contributions aren't always about writing huge new features. Small polish fixes and edge-case handling matter just as much. I also learned how valuable constructive code reviews are for growing as a developer. If you're a student thinking about contributing to open source, just pick a small bug and jump in!
